Winning Tactics
Evidence-based strategies you can use today.
"The single biggest negotiation
mistake: not negotiating."
Research from Carnegie Mellon found that women who don't negotiate their first salary lose $500k+ over their careers. Every negotiation is a compounding investment in yourself. You are not being difficult — you are being professional.

6 Core Tactics to Master First
01
The High Anchor
State a number first — and make it ambitious. Research shows the first number on the table has an outsized influence on the final outcome. You can always come down; you can rarely go up.
"Based on my research and the value I bring, I'm looking at $115,000."
02
Strategic Silence
After you make your ask, stop talking. The urge to fill silence with concessions is natural — resist it. Silence signals confidence and gives the other party space to respond or improve their offer.
State your number. Count to 10 in your head. Do not speak first.
03
Name the Pattern
If someone pushes back with "you're asking for too much," name what's happening: "I notice we keep coming back to the budget constraint — let's explore what flexibility looks like."
"Help me understand what's driving that constraint — is it the number or the timing?"
04
Bundle, Don't Bargain
Instead of trading one concession at a time, put multiple issues on the table together. This creates value for both parties and avoids a pure price war.
"What if we looked at salary, title, and remote flexibility as a package?"
05
BATNA as Leverage
Always know your Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement. You don't have to reveal it — just knowing it changes how you carry yourself. Walk-away power is real power.
Before any negotiation: write down exactly what you'll do if they say no.
06
The Thank-You Reframe
When offered less than you want, respond with warmth: "Thank you for that — I was hoping we could get closer to X." This maintains the relationship while holding your position.
"I appreciate the offer. I was hoping we could land closer to $105,000 — is there room there?"

Dealing with the "aggressive woman" perception — how do you handle it?
I've been told I come across as "too direct" when negotiating even though my male colleagues say the same things without pushback. Has anyone found reframings that work?
